The Difference Between Hinduism and Buddhism

Buddhism and Hinduism both have their origins in India. Buddhism is a part of Hinduism because it is a form of the truth and goes back to the original teachings of the “Vedic sages”, not the teachings afterword. However, there are quite a few fundamental differences between Hinduism and Buddhism.

Hinduism

Hinduism is something in which one strongly believes in everlasting “atman” which means soul. Hindu worship many gods and goddesses. In this religion, the followers pray all natural sources of the earth like stones, water, sun etc. Hinduism also recognizes that there is suffering in human life; the sorrows are attributed to previous karma or actions of the human being.

Buddhism

In Buddhism there is no concept of “I” and “self” but it is about finding the “Anatman”, Buddha did not deny the existence of any god, he preached that it is useless or pointless to seek and search for something which an individual is not even aware of. The goal of this religion is to attain enlightenment and be released from the cycle of rebirth and death, thus attaining “Nirvana”.

Hinduism VS. Buddhism

  • Hinduism is based on the concept of atman while Buddhism denies the existence of an eternal soul
  • The place of worship in Buddhism is temples, shrines while in Hinduism there are only temples.
  • The founder of Buddhism is Buddha while in Hinduism there is no credited to a particular founder.
  • Buddhism believes in attaining nirvana through the four noble truths and eightfold path while Hinduism believes there are several ways one can reach to God or find God.
  • Hinduism believes in the existence of several gods whereas Buddhism reasons as to why one should seek and search a God which nobody is aware of.
  • The symbol in Buddhism is conch, endless knot, fish, lotus, parasol, and vase, while in Hinduism is Om, Swastika, etc.
  • In Hinduism, it’s believed that extreme severity and simplicity is the ideal spiritual life while In Buddhism, the middle path is considered to be best for ideal life; neither extreme poverty nor extreme wealth are considered to be ideal.
